Aptly named the Venice of India,  the city of Udaipur is one of the most beautiful and romantic destinations in Rajasthan, with pastel coloured houses, a magnificent palace and the best of Rajput architecture centred on a dreamy crystal coloured lake.

While travelling in India generally has a reputation for being a glorious assault on the senses, a theory I can’t exactly dispute, Udaipur is the exception to the analogy and one of the prettiest cities I’ve ever visited, with ample opportunity to relax.

It’s difficult not to be swept away by the beautiful interiors of the city palace or captivated by your surroundings during a sunset boat ride, passing yet another white palace floating on the lake.

The colourful city is full of charm that invites long walks through the colourful streets, to admire shops and hardworking vendors as you careen down lanes, stop in coffee shops and chai stalls or buy yourself an Udaipur-ian miniature painting of which the city is famed for.

Udaipur is also the city in which I had the privilege of attending an Indian wedding.
